“These paintings remind me of emblems. Each distinct but from a similar dream-like place where there are leaves, coat hangers, birds, fish, instruments, moons, rowboats, rocks and more… My ideas begin through drawing, and when I draw the same shape enough it starts to take on its own character, it becomes animated. I'm compelled to make a painting when a drawing has surprised me – and it feels right to turn it into a painting. I spend a lot of time wiping paint off the canvas with water, just as much time as putting paint on. I am trying to distil, simplify, almost chisel out the image I’m working on. With each painting there's moments of chance that you could never plan. That’s the inventive part and why I love doing it. I think my favourite artists I could describe them as inventors, they introduce you to their own world, to something that is personal and totally their own.” ——Martin George, 2025
